“Schroeds”

By Thomas Musgrave
Schroeder is a very interesting character in the Peanuts world. While he doesn’t have the global recognition of Charlie Brown or Snoopy, he is distinguishable by one thing: his skill on the toy piano. He seeks to be just like his idol, Ludwig van Beethoven, as he plays his music and attempts to imitate his lifestyle. Schroeder consistently rejects Lucy’s love for him because Beethoven was a lifelong bachelor (among other reasons). Schroeder’s skill on piano and relative maturity is impressive for his age, and truly builds his character as one of the most known in the world of Charlie Brown.

Throughout the show process, my cast-mates have often compared me to Schroeder, based on looks, personality, and love of music. While I didn’t agree at first, I’ve come to realize how similar I am to Schroeder. When auditioning for the show, I wasn’t even interested in the part of Schroeder because it was out of my vocal comfort zone. However, the directors had faith in me for this role, and I appreciate it immensely, as Schroeder has been one of my favorite characters to portray due to our similarities.

Music has always been an important part of my life, and piano was the first instrument I learned as a kid. I took piano lessons for 7 years before stopping to focus on violin, and while I may not have Schroeder’s skills on piano, I can still pluck out some Beethoven classics. My blonde hair isn’t quite as bright yellow as Schroeder’s, but it is close enough to see some resemblance.

Personality wise, Schroeder is often one of the quiet members of the Peanuts gang, and he is always very focused on his music. His dedication to the art is inspiring. Throughout the comics, Schroeder is consistently seen practicing on his toy piano, and always is talking about his favorite composer, Beethoven. I think we can all learn from Schroeder’s determination and dedication to his passion. With the help from his supporters like Lucy, who is always seen listening to his practice, he strives to be a better musician while pushing away all distractions. Honestly, I wish I had the practice tendencies of Schroeder!

Schroeder has been one of my favorite characters to portray. In definite characteristics, such as looks and interests, Schroeder and I are quite similar. However, Schroeder’s determination and dedication to his passion is something I’ve been working towards throughout this show process. I’m excited to play this character for an audience!
